The Cannabis plant contains over 500 chemicals. Sixty-six of those have been identified as cannabinoids, chemicals unique to the plant. There are also other compounds whose effects are not fully understood yet.
The two cannabinoids getting the most attention are tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) and cannabidiol (CBD). THC is what causes the “high” in marijuana. It stimulates the brain sending signals to nerve cells creating a sense of euphoria. CBD meanwhile is non-psychoactive, working instead to calm the brain.
